The SOSE Statement

The SOSE Profile

The SOSE Planning Grid

The SOSE Statement

A Statement on Studies of Society and Environment for Australian Schools provides a framework for curriculum development. The Statement, which is the result of national collaboration, provides teachers with a foundation for courses that will meet students' needs. It reflects advances in understanding both of SOSE and of how students learn.

Underpinning the Statement are the core groups of values of social justice, democratic process and ecological sustainability. These values are crucial if students are to become active, informed and responsible citizens.

The Statement organises the learning area into six strands: Time Continuity and Change, Place and Space, Culture, Resources, Natural and Social Systems and Investigation, Communication and Participation. The Statement also describes the six strands more fully as they apply to the four bands of - Band A lower primary, Band B upper primary, Band C junior secondary, and Band D, the post-compulsory years of schooling.

The SOSE Profile

The SOSE Profile describes the progression of learning typically achieved by students. It is designed to assist teaching and learning and to provide a framework for reporting student achievement.

The Profile outlines a suggested pathway of student learning outcomes over eight levels, for each strand. The outcomes in each strand are grouped under three strand-organisers or sub-strands.

The SOSE Planning Grid

The SOSE Planning Grid brings together, in poster form, the strands, values, perspectives, and essential learnings outlined in the SOSE Statement. These elements are incorporated on a matrix, which allows concepts and key ideas from the strands to be considered in the light of the perspectives and values, through lenses called organisers. The links are created by socially critical questions.
