Assessing outcomes in SOSE
Assessing
literacy and numeracy
Outcomes are statements which describe demonstrations of that which
students have learnt.
Outcomes can take a number
of forms:
learning area profiles,
criteria,
competencies and
capabilities
are all ways of describing
outcomes but the form they take differs greatly and may be used for
differing purposes.
The central document for
assessing student learning in SOSE from Kindergarten to Grade Eight
is the Studies of Society and Environment
profile for Australian Schools.
The Studies
of Society and Environment statement, Early Years Framework, the
Tasmanian Literacy Outcomes and Numeracy Outcomes, the Kindergarten
checklist, and the Social Skills outcomes also provide valid reference
points.
The Studies of Society and Environment profile
for Australian Schools suggests a sequence of learning outcomes
for SOSE, and can be used to form a profile map of a student's progress. This
form of assessment is commonly called developmental assessment.
These outcomes outline knowledge
and skills important for supporting responsible, participatory citizenship
throughout the compulsory years of schooling.
This
story of a SOSE activity shows a range of assessment opportunities.
