Algebra/Chemistry Mixture Problems  
This site shows a lesson plan outline on the topic of solving quantitative chemistry problems using  algebraic methods.  The approach used is non-traditional and involves using marshmallows and raisins.

Dow/NSTA Summer Workshop  
Projects developed by teachers participating in the 1997 and earlier Dow/NSTA Summer Workshop. The site is no longer being updated but the lesson plans are still available.  The first example plan from 1997 was looked at investigating the topic of Esters and perfumes and the site provided ideas for a series of lessons on this. 

Other interesting looking topics from the 1997 pack are To Gel or Not To Gel – preparation of a reusable ice pack; How Degrading! -  Looking at parts per million. 

The series of lesson plans is quite extensive. For teachers of secondary classes.

Chemical Detective seeks to capture students enthusiasm for forensic science and use this as a vehicle to teach facets of chemical, physical and biological science.  Aimed at students in secondary classes with some material being most suitable for Grades 10 through to 12.

Chemystery: An interactive guide to Chemistry         
A virtual Chemistry textbook developed to provide an interactive guide for High school Chemistry students, this was created by a group of students for the 1996 ThinkQuest Internet Contest. CHEMystery enables students to further expand their Chemistry knowledge, and interact with USENET news groups. It is a novel supplement to traditional Chemistry textbooks, since there is also an on-line search facility, and audio accompaniments (WAV format) to supplement many sections.

Chem4kids
Information on matter, atoms, elements, reactions and biochemistry, written for students.

Forensic Science - an easily navigable and highly readable site, this was created to provide the layperson with an easy understanding of what Forensic Science entails.  There are brief but informative explanations of some of the main disciplines within Forensic Science, accompanied by suitably chosen graphics.  These include: firearms and tool mark identification; Forensic Psychiatry and profiling; questioned document examination (for example, forgery, counterfeiting, handwriting analysis); Criminal Law; personal identification (such as, fingerprints, DNA analysis, odontology); Forensic photography and crime scene processing.  There is also information on careers in Law enforcement (USA based), and a suggested reading list with some links to other Forensics sites.  Mainly for use with secondary students. 

Forensic entomology
This site was created in order to assist in the education of crime scene technicians, homicide investigators, coroners, medical examiners, and others involved in the death investigation process.

Mathematics and molecules
This website gives students, teachers, and the general public, information about the rapidly growing fields of molecular modelling and related areas.  There is a segment for K-12 students that relates basic concepts in Mathematics to molecular modelling as well as some online experiments.
Experimental versions of two hypermedia textbooks are now on-line.

Model Chemistry Lab Software
Free download of an evaluation version of the software. Includes Acid-Base Titration, Fractional Crystallization, Specific Heat, Gravimetric and Volumetric Analysis  

Periodic table
This is a very useful site for upper secondary students.  You can print off your own periodic table and find out all the information you might ever need to know about each element.  It has pictures as well so you can get an idea of what the element looks like.

Southwest Biotechnology and Informatics Centre
The Web site offers a wide variety of K-12 education activities such as iDNAfication, in which participants aim to solve a mystery crime using forensic techniques; PCR Dash, which illustrates a DNA reduplication procedure called the polymerase chain reaction (PCR); and Outbreak!, an interactive Web game that teaches students to use microbiology skills as the screen for pathogens on a budget of $165.

Understanding Our Planet Through Chemistry  

This link to the U.S. Geological Survey site shows how chemists and geologists use analytical chemistry to do a range of tasks like determine the age of the Earth; show that an extraterrestrial body collided with the Earth; predict volcanic eruptions; observe atmospheric change over millions of years; document damage by acid rain, pollution of the Earth's surface and much more.  An easy to use site with a lot of information but definitely for senior students as the information is very thorough in content.

Who Dunnit
This site has information on practical information relating to forensic science.  There is also a crime scene where students can search for clues ans solve the crime.

Who Stole the Minister's Malibu
Enter this competition which uses a forensic scenario.  The 2002 competition has now finished, but information on the activities is still there.

This site has an energy calculator and tips for saving energy.

Physics.org
A site from the Institute of Physics with a great deal of information.  Of particular interest is the interactive Physics Life section where you explore a cartoon streets and get information about he physics behind how things work.  Other options include a constants and equations page and the facility to ask questions.

A collection of 200 lesson plans.

Weird Research, Anomalous Physics  
(Bill Beaty's Home Pages) An exciting and informative collection of articles and links for weird research and anomalous Physics is found here. There are many articles on antigravity, neondymium (rare earth magnets), tesla coils, and ball lightning and related topics. Detailed plans (with diagrams) of construction projects on these, and similar topics such as unnatural hologram, electrostatics projects, and Science museum devices, are also available. The author provides some great motivational ideas for teaching topics such as electrostatics, gravitation, and magnetism. Includes Science versus Science Fiction and  alternative energy resources.

Cloud Forests
A visually impressive website which would be a good resource for Environmental Science students or students looking at issues to do with rainforests and their conservation.  Most suitable for middle to upper secondary classes.

Dragon fly  
For primary & secondary students, this site explores Webs of Life, Animal Communication, Ice and Snow, Skeletons (including a virtual dinosaur dig), Flight and Trees. It is being added to frequently. 

EELink Endangered Species
This site links to material on endangered species of the US.  It contains links to extensive amounts of information on all aspects of this topic and many links to information for other areas of the world including Australia and New Zealand. One link contains information on the world’s rarest mammals and includes the northern hairy nosed wombat. The whole site is  well set out with lots of direction clearly evident as to what is available and the site was easy to navigate – well worth a look for any high school student.

Environment Australia's Education site
Environment Australia’s home page with links to green facts, schools activities and kits, and tips with lots of ideas for activities.  There is also teacher’s section. It may be a little hard to find what you want but it would be worth a look for general environmental information.

Environmental data bases for schools
This database aims to provide Secondary School pupils with objective information on the co-existence of Engineering and the Environment. It covers such topics as acid rain, global warming, and alternative energy

Franklin Institute  
Undersea and Oversee: the past, present, and future of our oceans
Understand the oceans by taking an on-line voyage. Respect the undersea world and accept the challenge to oversee the ocean’s future. In the Year of the Ocean this site is well worth a visit.

Virtual Frog Dissection Kit
This award-winning interactive program is part of the "Whole Frog" project. You can interactively dissect a (digitised) frog named Fluffy, make movies, and play the Virtual Frog Builder Game. The interactive Web pages are available in a number of languages.  Links to other FrogWatch sites. 

Web Resource for Genetics, Bioethics, and Biotechnology
This site provides a large number of connections which give information on genetics and biotechnology.  Most material is aimed at Grade 9 and above but there are ideas for introducing genetics and biotechnology material to younger children on one or two links.

Australia's indigenous peoples have a rich heritage of astronomical observation and story telling.  This website at Questacon contains stories from Questacon's book 'The Emu in the Sky', a collection of Aboriginal astronomy stories from all around Australia.

This Web site has real time data, photo archives, and more than enough information on the active volcano range. A stopping point for students and teachers looking for volcano data. 

Earth & moon viewer

NASA Kids
This site contains news, activities, stories, quizzes, information, and games about space and space travel.

NASA lunar prospector
This is an excellent site with many possible uses for senior primary and secondary students. It gives quality information about what is happening with the data collected by the lunar prospector and has a variety of links to other information about the moon. 

NASA Quest  
NASA Quest is a rich resource for educators, kids and space enthusiasts who are interested in meeting and learning about NASA people and the national space program. Have possibilities for most age groups. 

NASA Spacelink          
An aeronautics and space resource for education - one of the range maintained by NASA. Has a hot topics link which can give you interesting and up to date information. The Cool Picks site also looked good – one segment the Imagine Mars link - contained ideas for a cross curricula unit.

NSSDC's Planetary Image Archives
All the images presented on NSSDC's (National Space Science Data Center - US) Image Catalog are in the public domain.  Images are sorted by planet and there is a fact sheet about each planet.  There is also a mission index and a search utility.

OzSkywatch - Educator's Page
The material provided is intended to be useful for educators Australia-wide, but uses the Victorian Science Curriculum and Standards Famework II (2000) document as a guide.  Adjust the words where necessary to suit your state or territory's syllabi.  It lists Learning Activities & Opportunities in 2002, provides an entry point to the OzSkywatch.com email lists, upcoming conferences and public events, and online educational resources.

An excellent link site for Maths and Science teachers; this contains lessons, activities, and tales of classroom success. Users can also find: Journal articles, professional development sites and standards documents to put theory behind the action. The site includes valuable Mathematics and Science Internet links for educators, and World Wide Web sites to either supplement existing curricula, or integrate the Internet into classroom practice.

Encarta lesson collection
For Teachers, a wide range of lesson plans for students of all grades. Well worth viewing and contributing to this site.  

Eurekalert!
This site allows access to current research in Science, Medicine and Engineering. The visitor enters this news server through a Table of Contents which contains links to numerous world-wide Web sites. The news releases for the previous fortnight can be searched by topic or organisation. The archive index contains the full history of news releases. Annotated bibliographies of research articles are accessed via these links, but to gain full access to most documents the reader must subscribe to the particular journal.  

Global Schoolhouse
A site for teacher to share ideas and focus on collaborative learning approaches.  The section on creating your own newspaper looked interesting. This is a general site and contains applications to other areas besides Science.

Information on a number of science topics.  Includes the biology physics and chem4kids sites, which are written for students.

Nobel Prize Internet Archive
Here is an outstanding site for information about Nobel Prize winners.
The screen is divided into three parts: interactive icons; a quick search facility; and a display window. Visitors can search under the conventional headings: Physics; Peace; Physiology and Medicine; Literature; Economics; and Chemistry. A scroll further down reveals other categories, such as women recipients, and Nobel Prize winners, awarded to individuals with sometimes humorous and often dubious or obscure research. The database is accessed through an alphabetical index or through the quick search option. The results are presented in table form with hyperlinks to more information about the specific recipient. Within each Bibliography there are links to journals, other print resources, and specific Internet sites.

This is a massive site, being a gateway to some 50 000 other sites. It is kept up to date by professional scientists whose mission it is to identify and centralize the most valuable science resources on-line.

ARS Science 4 Kids
This site is from the Agricultural Research Service and is aimed at students aged 8 to 13. It introduces various projects of ARS scientists through a collection of stories. These stories are short, illustrated and written with young readers in mind. The site is linked to the ARS magazine and has a search engine.  

Cool Science for Curious Kids
Students can explore animal classifications, dust particles in the air, the stages of the life of a butterfly and which plants to use in a garden salad. There are questions and activities for the curious.  

Cyber science
CSIRO presents experiments, puzzles, magazines and downloadable media.  

Classroom Antarctica  The huge education website prepared by the Australian Antarctic Division.

Double Helix Science Club  The homepage of CSIRO’s Double Helix Club.

Goscience
A Victorian education department site with cool answers to the questions kids want to ask.  Topical and interesting information including topics such as skating and surfing.  Recommended for Grade 8 and above but could be useful for upper primary

NOVA Science in the news

For  primary & secondary students, this is the web site of the Australian Academy of Science. Contains excellent, up-to-date Science information. Provided at this easily navigated site are background material and teaching resources on current issues in: Biology; Chemistry; Environment; Geology; Health; and Physics.  Information is presented in a very readable form. The teaching resources include excellent and appropriate practical activities, and a comprehensive glossary for each topic. Each topic contains appropriate links to other related sites on the Internet. Teachers may subscribe to a mailing list to be informed when new topics are posted.  


PBS science and technology

Anthropology, Digitechnology, Life Science, Physics Mysteries and more.  This is the science & technology part of PBS, a non-profit media enterprise owned and operated by 349 public television stations in the United States.

This site provides forums for the exchange of information on curriculum development and is a great source of materials and resources. Of particular interest is the National Middle Schooling Project.  

Gifted Students
This site has a range of interesting things including suggestions for working with gifted students. This may be of interest to teachers who are concerned with the education of gifted students.  

Institute of Inquiry
This section of the Exploratorium's site was created in response to widespread interest in inquiry-based science instruction.  Materials which can be downloaded from this site include a book on Inquiry in the K-5 classroom, the 2000 issue of Connect which focuses on inquiry learning, sample inquiry activities and other resources.

KnowDrama

Science centres/museums

Questacon
Voted in the top 100 sites in February 1996, this site contains a wide range of hands-on Science activities for students at all levels. Apart from these activities, it is possible to take a virtual tour of Questacon or click on What’s New to find out the latest Science exhibitions.

Exploratorium, USA
The Museum of Science Art and Human Perception.  An interesting link to a site on sport science, which would be useful to get high school kids interested.  Includes a section on skateboard science that was informative.

The Franklin Institute Science Museum
Lots of online exhibits to look at including one on Ben Franklin himself which had a lot of information, as well as some links to ideas for activities which were a little different. The information seemed suitable for upper primary as well as secondary students.

Ontario Science Centre
Have you ever wanted to know if you can make a chimp chuckle?  There is information on this unusual topic and more in the SciZone which is accessible through this site. There are also games, suggested experiments and more.

American Museum of Natural History
A number of online scientific exploration are available at this Museums Web site.

Tasmanian Science Education Centres 
A link through the Tasmania discover website to the various resource centres in Tasmania.  Included is the Forest Education centre, Marine Discovery centre, the Minerals Council, the Hydro Hands on Energy Discovery Centre and CSIROSEC.

BHP Billiton Science Awards
Information about the awards available to Australian students and teachers.

Eureka prizes
The awards are administered by the Australian Museum, and have sections open to students as well as scientists.  The schools prizes are valued at around $11 000, and involve students carrying out some research and publishing it as a website.

Rio Tinto Australian science olympiads
Aimed at Australia’s top students, there are biology, chemistry and physics Olympiads.

Thinkquest       
Visit one of the Thinkquest libraries to view websites which have been set up by students as part of the Thinkquest competition.  Many sites are of a high standard and have resources and information which would be useful to teachers.

Tasmanian Science Talent Search
The TSTS is open to all age groups from K-12.  It is organised by STAT, the Science Teachers Association of Tasmania.  Sections include: posters, creative writing, working models, computer presentations, photographic essays, science games, technology challenge and research investigations.
