DESCRIPTION:
Body length to 90mm. A bright green, very handsome frog. After basking in the sun, which it loves, it glows almost irridescent green and gold. Always a pale green mid-dorsal stripe, often black & bronze spots in a linear series on the back, blue colouration behind legs.
No finger webbing, toes little less then full webb. Female is white under throat, the male has a brown speckle under throat.
HABITAT:
Ground living, lake living and tree climbing always, it lives near deep permanent water; breeds in large swamps and dams with aquatic vegation. Often seen hopping across roads on warm wet nights. Enjoys basking in the sun for hours at a time. Regurlaly found in the same spot, day after day. Found in large colonies such as at Blackman's Lagoon.
DISTRIBUTION:
Mostly confined to the NE of Tasmania, numbers in the south of the State have decreased in recent years. Found on both King and Flinders islands.
CALL:
Very long modulated growl alternating with a series of grunts, in spring and summer. Craw-aw-aw-aw-awk
crok, crok. Can emit a loud scream if handled. Emits a pulsed, loud snarling noise when in distress. Known to scare cats!
UNUSUAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Very strange call; powerful and active; eats anything smaller than itself that moves including tadpoles, snails, small frogs (the only cannibal), lizards & insects; can eat underwater!
