DESCRIPTION:
Body length to 45mm. Delicately built, agile climber & leaper, broad dark brown patch on back, background colour is light brown. Backs of thighs orange. Well developed disks on all toes & extensive webbing. Males have greyish brown throats. Snub nose.
HABITAT:
Very common near permanent & temporary water, breeds in garden ponds. During the day and in dry weather takes refuge under logs and stones or old fence posts, or in dense vegetation.
DISTRIBUTION:
Spread throughout Tasmania including the highlands and both King and Flinder's islands.
CALL:
A merry trilled, long whirring call of 8-20 notes 'reeee-ree-ree-ree
' with the first note being longer than the rest. Rarely heard during the day but one of the commonest night sounds through most of the year, especially just after rain.
UNUSUAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Can travel about, readily moving 50m within a few hours; climbs trees and windows.
