Tasmanian DoE Learning Objects

The following learning objects developed by the Tasmanian Department of Education are for review by teachers.

Artists and Place

You can download many elements of the Open-IT units that have been developed on CD ROM from this site.  Each file has been zipped to assist with download speed. Instructions are provided to assist you with saving the files on your machine.

Each of the units also has a website. On each website you will find:

  • Teacher and Student Notes
  • Communication Tools such as Chat, Discussions, shared Whiteboard and Email
  •  Resources.

After you obtain a copy of the unit, you may add your own activities and resources, involve students in your class or group in online communication in a password protected environment, and share student work online.

Each unit or 'element' that can be downloaded from this site has a brief description and an indication of the students who might use the materials. A wide range of years is given. Students at the lower range will need a greater level of support in using the materials.

The Sandwich Builder  Use the sandwich builder to create your own sandwich, and use the recipe book to find out the sandwich's nutritional value.

Bold Brushstrokes and Lively Lines (elements of this unit could be used by students in Years 4-12, although the original unit is for students in Years 6-8). This unit looks at Visual Arts and Visual Literacy.

Rapping to the Beat (for students in Years K-3). This unit looks at the use of rhymes and rhythms in games (clapping etc), language and the playground.

Oh, What a Day! (for students in Years K-3). This unit looks at how students recognise and describe/represent their feelings.

Who Needs a Wilderness Road? (for students from Grades 5-8). This unit looks at the impact of building a new road through a wilderness area and asks students to consider the views of all the different stakeholders.

Jigsaw Story (for students of any age who can read independently). This great tool can be used for text reconstruction. Teachers and students upload their own text to the 'machine'. The machine will break the text into sections using either paragraphs or sentences, and students have to reconstruct it.

Cloze Machine (for students of any age who can read independently). This great tool is used for online cloze exercises. Teachers and students upload their own text to the 'machine'.  They then choose a level of difficulty and the machine will take out a corresponding number of words. Students have to position the removed words in the appropriate places.

LOTE Identikits
These identikits allow you to explore and create facial features using different LOTEs. There are two different types of identikit. Identikit 1 introduces the vocabulary for parts of the face, and Identikit 2 gives students the chance to practise recalling that vocabulary.

The simulations need to be downloaded to a folder on your computer in order to work properly and all the files you download should be in the same folder.

FrogSearch
This great self-contained database of Tasmania frogs supports students whilst they learn about and undertake basic search techniques.
