Rosetta Primary School

School Profile

“Rosetta Primary - Learning for Life”

Rosetta Primary is a middle class school in the Derwent District.    Rosetta Primary was partly destroyed by fire in 1982 , reopening in 1985.   Rosetta is a popular choice presently educating 420 students, situated between Glenorchy and Abbotsfield Primary Schools.

The whole school community supports the fact that Rosetta Primary aims to become a Health Promoting School.   A Committee has been developed with Staff, S.R.C., School Council, Parent and Canteen representatives which encourages our school to follow the principals of a Health Promoting School.  i.e.

  • to develop a supportive ethos and environment.
  • promote co-operative partnerships.
  • and encourage appropriate teaching and learning experiences.

The areas of particular importance to Rosetta Primary are:

  • Developing a Canteen based on Healthy Food Guidelines.
  • The continuation of our Daily P.E. Program.
  • The promotion of leadership through our Aussie Sports Leaders and Mediators programs.

 Getting Started

  • At Rosetta we continually promote the importance of a Health Promoting School through:    General and Staff Meetings, P.& F., Parent liason, and the inclusion of regular Newsletter articles on healthy ideas.
  • Our school sun-smart policy was reviewed with appropriate changes made to allow on-going accreditation of Rosetta primary as a Sun-smart School
  • Occupational Health and Safety Meetings are held on a regular basis at Rosetta with staff and Parent Representatives discussing appropriate ideas for our School.
  • A Canteen Committee was formed as part of our H.P.S. Committee.   We sought advice from Carol Nicholson from the Canteen Association and also invited Canteen Managers from Lindisfarne North to address our H.P.S. Meeting.   As we wish to successfully run our canteen based on the Healthy Food Guidelines, discussion of their experiences were invaluable to us.
  • Our Physical Education Program incorporates the following:

Ø      Continuous contact is maintained with Rosetta High School Sports Leaders through a specialised games program with E.C.E. classes  and they also assisted in the successful running of our Mini Olympics.

Ø      Through our Newsletter and whole school assemblies we encourage student participation in activities offered at the Glenorchy Y.M.C.A.

Ø      Student leadership programs.

Ø      Mediators and Aussie Sports leaders.

 Planning

  • At Rosetta we focus our planning on the Health and P.E. Core Curriculum and Healthy Food Guidelines.
  • When setting up our Canteen we followed several avenues.

Ø      A general meeting was held with interested staff and parents  to determine an ‘ideal’ canteen to meet the requirements of Rosetta staff and students.

Ø      We visited other schools to view the successful running of canteens.

Ø      We invited other parties to address our H.P.S. Meeting.

Ø      Our canteen facilities were upgraded to allow canteen accreditation.

Major Focus

Our goals and strategies included:

  • Attainment of silver accreditation of our canteen
  • Provide a service to the students through the provision of a canteen offering healthy alternatives.
  • At Rosetta Primary we promote the importance of health and physical well being across the curriculum, taking the opportunity to support many appropriate activities. E.g.

Jump Rope for Heart

Selling of U.V. stickers for Skin Awareness Week.

Key Results

Our canteen has been well accepted.   We have a keen enthusiastic parent management which helps provide a platform for key healthy events.  E.g.

Healthy Bones – Dental Health Week

Successful competitions that the whole school is encouraged to participate in are held during these weeks.

We try to adhere as closely as possible to the Health Food Guidelines and as result our canteen has been well supported by staff and students.

Student leadership opportunities at Rosetta has allowed the extension of our daily P.E. program to include Kindergarten students and be run four days a week by our Aussie Sports Leaders.   Our mediation program  encourages co-operative games and the development of social skills in our playground.   An establishment of a Buddy class system throughout our school encourages greater interaction between our primary and E.C.E. students.
