Montagu Bay Primary School 2000

School Profile

Montagu Bay Primary is situated on the banks of the Derwent River.  It has an enrolment of approximately 260 students.

Getting Started

We were invited to participate in the Tasmanian K-6 Health and PE Trial School Project.  As part of the project our tasks included;

§          Becoming familiar with the Tasmanian Core Curriculum.

§          Planning, developing and trialing initiatives to integrate HPE across the curriculum and develop a whole school approach to health promotion.

§          Documenting progress for distribution to all primary schools in the state.

 Planning

Our School team (which included a primary teacher and a HPE specialist) participated in 2 x 2day residential workshops with the six other schools involved in the project.  We took part in a professional development program to identify issues based on the needs of our school community.  We developed action plans and strategies to trial.

  Major Focus

We organised a ‘K-6 Healthy Science Expo’ with planned activities, which incorporated the main ideas and key intentions of the HPE Curriculum.  Our goals were;

§          To integrate science and health.

§          To focus on the HPE Core Curriculum (and ensure all staff became familiar with the document).

§          To provide additional leadership opportunities for Grade 6 students.

Our activities included;

1.     Check you pulse

2.     What’s your reaction?

3.     Lung Capacity

4.     Foot size and speed???

5.     Height and distance jumped

6.     Healthy body survey

7.     Lifting your body weight

8.     2 minute skip

Grade 6 leaders lead small groups of students around each of the stations.  Each student received a passport where they recorded their results.

 Key Results

§          We believe our Grade 6 students developed more confidence and developed skills through their leadership and participation in the expo

§          The ‘expo’ encouraged parents to become involved in their students learning

§          Teachers were able to make links between HPE and other learning areas and have developed a clearer understanding of the HPE Curriculum.
