Clarence High School 2000 School Profile Clarence High School has a
current enrolment of 740 students. Home
groups are structured vertically to allow ongoing peer support for younger
students. There are 28 Home Groups,
each with peer supporters who volunteer to lead activities throughout the year.
These students attend 3 afternoon training sessions and one full day
session Getting Started We began by
establishing Health Promoting Schools as a Target Outcome within the school’s
Partnership Agreement in 1999. This was the second year
of the implementation phase and a time for consolidation of the program.
Planning What steps did we
follow: 1.
The program was a continuation of the trial begun the previous year. Outcomes from Partnership
Agreement to be achieved: ·
Greater student leadership
opportunities ·
Greater student involvement in
the decision making processes within the school ·
Move Clarence High School toward
a health promoting school 2.
This was achieved by increasing opportunities for students to be involved
in the Peer Support program 3.
We moved Mind Matters material into every class through Peer Supported
Activities, making the program a part of the school’s curriculum and ethos. 4. The honeymoon period for introducing the Mind Matters project at CHS was over, it was time to consolidate key components of the program relevant to our school. Major focus Goals and Strategies ·
To provide greater opportunities
for student leadership. 87 students
have received certification for their involvement and leadership of the program
during 2000. ·
During home group students were
involved in the following topics through student led sessions on Mental Health,
Bullying and Harassment, Discrimination, Dealing with stress, Coping Skills,
Goal Setting. Key Results ·
Large numbers of students who
would not have previously had the opportunity now gain leadership opportunities. ·
Boost in Self-Esteem, Team work,
planning ·
Whole school approach to
addressing mental health themes eg Reducing Bullying and Harassment was a theme
that was highlighted during term 2. Students
undertook work in this area in HPE, Home Group, and the Arts.
It was also a focus for assemblies and the newsletter.
Boosting
Self-Esteem of Students The second component of
the program was the teaching of relationship skills. This was undertaken in Health and Physical Education lessons
through the Sport Education program. What
this involved was the teaching of specific skills to improve how students relate
to each other in this environment and improve their self-esteem. Examples of this
were: ·
The teaching specifically for the
use of praise and congratulations appropriately amongst team mates. ·
Acceptance of others in your
team. ·
Congratulating the play of others ·
Knowing the names of all players
in your team and encouraging them. ·
Working as a team by helping team
members to improve any weaknesses. The result was the
removal of “win at all costs” attitude. Greater support for quiet
students, who were made to feel a part of the team. Encouragement for all
students and increased participation levels for all students. |
